Love letter templates

13 complete letters you can copy, with the personal parts marked in [brackets]. Below them, the four-part structure every one of these follows, so you can write your own without a template at all. Free, no account needed.

The four parts of a love letter

Almost every letter that lands has the same skeleton. Once you can see it, the template becomes optional, which is the point.

1

The opening

Their name, and nothing else. No greeting template, no "I hope this finds you well". The name alone already says the letter is for one person.

Marina,

2

The memory

One specific moment, with enough detail that nobody else could have written it. This is the part that decides whether the letter works, and it is the part most people skip.

"The Tuesday you drove two hours because I had a bad week and did not say so."

3

The feeling

What changed in you, not how great they are. Praise is easy to doubt; evidence is not.

"I used to think I needed a lot of space. Turns out I had not met anyone I wanted in it."

4

The closing

Something forward-looking, then your name. A letter that only looks backwards reads like a summary.

"Next year I want us to finally do the trip we keep talking about."

The second part is where letters fail. "You are amazing" could have gone to anybody; the Tuesday with the two-hour drive could not. If you only fix one thing, fix that one.

Romantic and Intense

For when you want to express deep feelings with strength and beauty.

[Name],

There's something I've never told you, but think about almost every day: [describe something specific you observe and admire about this person].

Since [marking moment or time], my life changed in a way I didn't expect. Mornings became [how they're different now], and even simple things — like [example from daily life] — gained a new meaning because of you.

I'm not perfect at saying what I feel. But if I could sum it all up in one sentence: you're the best thing that's happened to me. Not because you're perfect — but because you're exactly who you are.

Thank you for [something specific this person does for you]. For [another gesture or quality]. For turning ordinary days into memories I'll keep forever.

This letter is my way of saying: I want to keep writing this story with you.

With all my love,
[Your name]

First Year

For the first anniversary — gratitude and looking forward.

[Name],

365 days. The math is simple, the meaning isn't.

A year ago I didn't know what I was getting into. I just knew I wanted more of you. And here we are, after [memorable moments — a trip, a hard time, a victory], and I'd choose every single day again.

You've changed [something specific in you — how you start the day, how you see things]. You showed me that [lesson learned together]. And I want to keep learning, year after year.

If the first year is this good, I refuse to imagine the tenth.

Happy anniversary, [Name].

I love you,
[Your name]

Daily Missing You

For when you want to bridge a small piece of distance.

[Name],

It's late and you're hours away and I'm writing this because texts aren't enough today.

I miss the small stuff — your laugh from another room, the way you reach for me in your sleep, the silence we share when we're both reading. I miss having you in the same air.

I picked this. You picked this. The distance is a season, not a verdict. And every day I'm closer to the day we don't have to keep track of time zones.

Thank you for being so easy to come back to. Counting down to the next time.

I love you,
[Your name]

After you fill in the brackets

The text is the hard part and it is done. What is left is deciding how it arrives, and the three options are not equivalent.

  • On paper. Still the best version if you can hand it over in person. Write it out rather than printing it if your handwriting is legible, because the effort is visible.
  • In a message. Fastest, and the one that disappears. A long text in a chat thread gets scrolled past in a week.
  • As its own page. Paste the text into LovePaper and it becomes a private link that does not expire, which they can reopen on the same date next year. Takes about five minutes, and you can still save it as a PDF from there if you want the paper copy too.

Questions people ask

Is there a love letter template in Word or PDF?

The templates here are plain text, so you can paste them straight into Word, Google Docs or Pages and format them however you like. If what you want is a finished file, write the letter on LovePaper first and use Save PDF on the finished page: you get a designed letter rather than a blank document you still have to lay out.

Can I print these?

Yes, in two ways. Copy the text into any document and print it, or publish the letter on LovePaper and save it as a PDF, which keeps the design and the photos. People usually print the PDF, hand over the paper copy, and keep the link as the version that never gets lost.

What is the right length for a love letter?

Between 150 and 400 words covers almost every case. Shorter than that and you only have room for generic lines; much longer and the specific parts get buried. Every template on this page sits in that range on purpose.

How do I personalize a template without it sounding copied?

Replace the brackets first, then delete any sentence that could have been written to someone else. If a line would still make sense addressed to a different person, it is doing no work. One real memory is worth four beautiful sentences.

Are these templates free?

Yes, all 13 texts are free to copy and use anywhere, with no account. Writing the letter on LovePaper also starts free; the paid part is only the extras like photos, music and some designs.

What is the difference between a template and an example?

An example is a finished letter written for somebody else, which you can read for inspiration but not use. A template has the personal parts marked in [brackets], so it is built to be filled in. Everything on this page is the second kind.
